KIT CARSON - THE HISTORY
Click here for a larger image Click here for a larger image Christopher 'Kit' Houston Carson was born in Kentucky on Christmas' eve, 1809. When he was 8, he could shoot a squirrel at 50 yards. He never knew how to read or write, but learned Spanish, French and many native languages. At 16, he ran from home to travel West with the caravans. Later he accompanied several explorations, including those of John C. Fremont. Scout, guide, interpreter, trapper, Carson was a real frontier man. In 1845, during the war with Mexico, he fought in the conquest of Los Angeles. When the Civil War started, he joined the Union Army, and became a Brigadier General. He died in 1868.
